The diagnostic tests to accompany personalized medicine is referred to as “companion diagnostics’”. Here, molecular assays that measure levels of proteins, genes or specific mutations are used to provide information for a therapy specific to an individual’s condition.
The benefits of companion diagnostics are varied and powerful. Risk assessments can be carried out for each individual patient. Conditions can be detected at an early stage of diseases, allowing earlier intervention and improving the chances of complete healing. Indeed, diagnoses can now be made more accurate, since the same symptoms may be traced back to different underlying causes, allowing for specific, prompt and effective therapy.
